A root is a word part that has your main idea. Sometimes it can stand on its own. Sometimes it needs some supporting details, just like a paragraph.
Roots get their detail help from prefixes and suffixes. You might hear roots called by another name, "base". "What is the base word?" is a common question your teacher might ask you as you're trying to solve a word.
